The video of my talk at Berkeley: America's Most Overrated Product: Higher Education

HERE is the video of the first section of my talk last week at Berkeley, America's Most Overrated Product: Higher Education. Most or all of the other six parts are accessible on the right side of that page.

I've now been asked to give that talk again at Santa Clara University on April 1. It's a free public event. For info, click HERE.

Marty,

I wanted to thank you so much for posting this talk. I am too far away to attend any of your speeches, so it is JOY to be able to watch at home.

I also never got to thank you for posting your piano concert which was incredible. I watched it like a movie... got some snacks and a cup of coffee. You really went above and beyond the call of duty to make it entertaining -- enjoyed all your stories. It was like a musical journey through your life.

My favorite you played was "Climb Every Mountain". Absolutely beautiful!

I first discovered you because I made a REALLY bad grad school decision and liked your comments about higher education, so this speech really hits home. Since then, I have read your articles, listened to both of your radio shows, and even occasionally emailed you. I feel so fortunate to have become aware of you, because you have really added a lot of wisdom to my life on many subjects.

I live in Tokyo, btw, I am now watching your speech to take my mind off all the stress and infrastructure problems in town this week caused by the earthquake. You have definitely touched more lives than you will ever know, I am sure of that.

I appreciate you telling the truth about higher education, even though it's an unpopular view. I wish I had known about you when I was in my 20's before I made so many bad career decisions, but I'm still glad I found out about you when I did. Keep up the good work!

Thank you, Jeff.

And Anonymous, thanks for pointing out the broken link. It's now fixed.

Oh and Jeff, as they, say, keep safe. I am so filled with admiration for how the Japanese people are responding to this perhaps unprecedented disaster.

I looked at the videos. I liked them.

One comment: near the end, I noticed that one student had called the campus a "monoculture," as far as ideology goes. You'd think that a culture that prides itself on "multiculturalism" would figure it out. Multiculturalism is far more than looking the part, but that's all that seems to matter.

Just one of the reason that higher education is overrated, in my opinion. Can you really call a place where you're being taught to think like everybody else & not for yourself "higher education"? If anything, that's lower education.

When I was a high school senior, I did not want to go to college. I only went because it seemed expected of me to go. I sometimes wonder what might have happened to me if I didn't go. Of the jobs I've held, 2 specifically "required" a college degree in the job ad, but after doing them, I could have done any of these jobs while still in high school.

Good luck at your talk in Santa Clara. Wouldn't be funny if this went viral? What would people think?

Hi Marty,
I loved your talk!. I wonder if you have read anything about Ricardo Samler:

Some news.

From the beginning of the article:

"Annual tuition increases at the University of California, significant layoffs, larger classes and reduced enrollment.

"That's the likely future unless state lawmakers put a tax extension on the ballot and voters approve it, UC finance experts told the regents Wednesday in San Francisco."

And little, if any, improvement.

Thanks, Adriana. The Semco model has been around for 20 years yet no other company has adopted its egalitarian, set-your-own-salary model. I wonder why.
